Big Bang Cosmology sans Blackbody

In the Lindau Nobel Meeting just concluded, George Smoot gave talk "CSI: Cosmic Scene Investigator" on Big Bang Cosmology, Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation, COBE satellite etc. A detailed report of Smoot's talk has now been published. To go there, search under

CSI: Cosmic Scene Investigator, nobelpreisträgertreffen, ScienceBlogs.de

(I cannot post a link.)

THE EXPUNGING OF THE BLACKBODY:

It is however, in German. I do not know how accurately this report reflects what Smoot actually said. But assuming it is accurate, there is here a stunning omission: It never once mentions the Cosmic Blackbody Radiation (the German word would be Schwarzkörper-Strahlung)! Instead, the talk makes do with Cosmic Background Radiation (Hintergrundstrahlung)! And notice this sentence:

"Diese Hintergrundstrahlung wurde sehr erfolgreich zuerst vom COBE-Satelliten beobachtet; danach noch genauer von WMAP."

It means:

The Background Radiation was first observed most successfully by the COBE satellite; and later more precisely by WMAP.

This is a tortured false sentence which is IMO a result of attempting to avoid saying Blackbody Radiation. The Background Radiation was first observed by Penzias and Wilson with an AT&T ground-based antenna. The COBE satellite's main contribution was high-precision measurement of its Blackbody form. That is what everything hinges on. And WMAP could not have measured this Blackbody form more precisely, for the COBE measurements reportedly pushed the limit of accuracy (the error bars were smaller than the thickness of the line through them!)

So the question is: Why this tortured avoidance of the most central and the most essential discovery behind this talk? (No blackbody, no Big Bang Cosmology!) Most curious. Can you imagine an international scientific conference on the structure of DNA where people painstakingly avoid using the expression "Double Helix"?

What may be happening is this: The insiders have advance information that the Cosmic Blackbody is going kaput. So they are making a preemptive strategy to carry on Big Bang Cosmology without the Cosmic Blackbody. This way, they think their gigantic enterprise will be saved, and countless august butts will be saved.

THE EXPUNGING OF THE DISCOVERER:

Simultaneously, John C. Mather, the discoverer of the high-precision Blackbody has disappeared from high profile public visibility. He has been abruptly removed from the exalted NASA position he was given following the Nobel Prize, and sent back to his pre-Nobel position. His celebrity-style lecture circuit has gone quiet. Neither in the Lindau meeting nor in another meeting in Paris in mid-July, centered on his discovery, has he been invited.

BACK STORY:

If we wish to read further on why Holy Grail they found (the Blackbody) is NOT!, search Google for the web page titled

Your selected quote is completely true. WMAP had 33 times the resolution for imaging the CMB radiation than COBE. More than that: the fact that you found a cosmological paper that doesn't mention the blackbody curve is a complete non-starter. I could find 10 such papers sitting next to me at the moment.

Exclamation Re: Big Bang Cosmology sans Blackbody

As Modest notes, the statement described in articles such tathis one (automatic English translation), don’t give any indication that Smoot’s 1/28/08 public lecture at the recent Cosmic Microwave Radiation Conference contained any unusually inclusion or omissions. It is not particularly unusual for a reference to the Cosmic microwave background radiation to omit commonly know details of its description, such as it’s very close match to an ideal black body spectrum. Were Smoot, or any other well-known astrophysicist to state that the CMBR deviated significantly from BBR, such a claim would be controversial, attended by extensive supporting data an analysis, and almost certainly published as a peer-reviewed journal article, not introduced to the world in an informal public lecture.

Aguest, if you have encountered such a claim, or data from COBE, WMAP, or other observatories supporting such a claim, please post it here. The search you suggest (“JOHN C. MATHER, NASA: PHYSICS NOBEL PRIZE SCIENCE FRAUD”) finds only a single reference to this bizarre geocities member page, which its author admits is “inspired upon several long puffs of the chilam” (a type of pipe typically used to smoke psychotropic drugs).

Inventing strange intrigues involving, conspiracies, frauds and cover-ups is not an appropriate way to discuss science. Therefore, this thread is moved to the strange claims forum.
