Re: Unexplainable event

___As I understand it, it is refraction from particular shapes of ice crystals in the air which are oriented a particular way.
___If you visit spaceweather frequently, you will see articles on sundogs of many varieties (there are Moon dogs too) along with Wes's explanation. You may also find these in their archives I suppose.
___Keep looking skyward!

Re: Unexplainable event

well if it's ice that would not make any sense because i saw this in the bay area, california, exactly one year ago.... that looks exactly like it though...can sundogs appear without the ice?

Clouds can often have ice crystals even if it is 60 or 70 on the ground. Haven't you ever been in a midsummer hailstorm? I guess some similar effects might be possible with water vapor as well.

Re: Unexplainable event

___No ice, no dogs. While freezing temp is common to crystals & hail, hail doesn't produce sundogs. The freezing is an artifact of lower temp at high elevation, yes. I'll look for an archived story where Less describes the size & shape of the crystals necessary to produce this effect.

I wasn't trying to say hail produced sundogs, only that hail shows that freezing temperatures can occur in the summer in the upper atmosphere.

Re: Unexplainable event

Talking about unexplainable events, has anyone here had dreams that become reality? I have had at least a half dozen in my lifetime that have come true. The most memorable one that comes to mind is when I dreamed that my brother was on an airplane and had come down with a violent illness. It bothered me so much that when morning came, I called my mother to check on him. Seems that he had "infact" gotten seriously ill while returning from a trip to Mexico. I had had no former knowledge of this journey as I was living in Ohio at the time and my brother was still living in Missouri where I was born and raised. These events are somewhat common for us humans, but there are no known scientific reasons for such occurrences. Any ideas why these events happen??
