LOUD silence

I was sitting in my car just recently, and I noticed a very LOUD kind of extreme silence, and i thought to myself.. "What am i hearing?"
I think that there is so much radio wave activity in society, that we can actually hear some of the frequencies.. not one alone, but when all combined... I could be wrong... if i am please correct me!

Re: LOUD silence

When I was a bachelor and still had disposable cash I wanted to build a stereo so powerful that if you put in a blank tape and turned up the sound you would need to shout over the silence.

There is a form of loud silence in the realm of sound cancelling. Like the headphones that block out background noise by playing the inverse of the noise into the headphones to cancel it out. In industry they use the same technology to mask the noise from equipment to help maintain a suitable work environment. It is an example of very loud noise for producing silence.

Re: LOUD silence

One of my clients demonstrated a monster hifi system that he built to me the other day.

And I found that there's a limit to the loudness you can experience. He cranked it up, and without losing any fidelity, the speakers performed beautifully. This was at about 50% power. As he cranked it up further, I could not discern a change in volume, but I did feel my skeleton rattling.

I kid you not.

As he increased the juice, first my jaw started rattling, and then the long bones in my arms and legs, and finally my ribs started vibrating.

It was the weirdest experience I've had in a while!

When I push my Klipsch LaScala's while you're in the room's sweet spot I can cause palpitations in your chest that you will find quite unnerving.

Re: LOUD silence

I'm not old enough to have gone to the few concerts where the boys used it, but Owsley's Wall-of-Sound is legendary. Even just looking at the pictures, its LOUD.

Your LaScalas are certainly quite loud, and are one of the most efficient speakers around. I believe you can get over 100dB from a 1W input. Still, they lack the low frequency response to really rattle your bones. Try a REL subwoofer!

Re: LOUD silence

I know what your talking about..
I've laid in bed and suddenly picked up massive noise.. in the sense that, any other sound in the room would of been a bit drowned out from the kind of kkksh silence...

I know what you mean..

Maybe you got the "TAOS HUM" its a pretty big phenomineom
