| Re: Even Without Math, Ancients Engineered Sophisticated Machines Well, like, DUHHHH! "Engineering" can often be done with just a well-trained, though subjective, experience of how the physical world behaves. My brothers and I built bows and arrows at the ages of 7 to 9, without any math. Didn't need any. I remember building an arch-supported bridge with wooden blocks when I was about 8 years old. There was some trial and error involved, but I succeed in building a stable arch some 8 inches wide, using blocks that were no more than 3 inches long. The ancients DID have drawing and "geometry" though maybe not as sophisticated as Euclid's. The basic architectural designs of buildings were scratched out on the polished sides of dressed stones in many known instances. It may not have been "math", but it was "design". All things considered, I do not find the results of the aforementioned research to be that surprising. |
