O Douglas

Why do you always shoot an arrow into the heart of the matter and ask the REALLY hard questions?

Some say that it is ONLY the soil micro-organisms that make Amazonian TP work
Cornell is researching this.
You may get an "answer" to your question there.

There was a soil microbiologist from Cornell who gave a talk at the IAI Conference at Terrigal, on TP micro-organisms that talk may be available at the IAI site
(Some are frightened that if it turns out that micro-organisms are what makes TP fertile the Yanks may copyright it etc)

I think the short answer is no-one has a clue (!!!)

One of the great benefits of TP has been the renewed interest in soil micro/flora/fauna
