Re: Nothing

Just for clarity, we are very cavalier in discussing 'nothing', but are we talking metric or imperial, here? What units are we using in measuring 'nothing'? Is 'nothing' under discussion here a zero reading in inch, millimeter, kilogram or pound? This is VERY important. Spacecraft have been lost due to a miscommunication of measuring units. The data sent back by those spacecraft amounted to nothing, simply because one technician worked in kilograms whilst the other in pound.

Very important question, Boerseun. The system prevents me from giving you any rep right now, so you'll have to be satisfied with nothing.

It is important to understand that because we use these idiosyncratic and arbitrary measurement systems--whether imperial or metric--that we are wasting our time trying to detect nothing. In order to detect nothing we need to come up with a new measurement system based on the ratio of the atomic weight of Nullodium to the harmonic frequency of a Bose-Einstein condensate. Otherwise nothing will appear not to exist, and we will never be able to communicate with it.

Moreover, please note that zero nothing is NOT equal to a null set. If you are going to expect me to roll out the abstract algebra necessary to prove this to you, you can expect nothing.

Being mysterious is nothing,

Re: Nothing

I would suggest using dimensionless units in this case and calculate a ratio of something to nothing then we will know exactly nothing about how far away from having nothing we are. As you know anything divided by nothing equals infinity, so as we approach nothing it should be painstakingly obvious as the ratio suddenly drops from infinity, down to 0.

Re: Nothing

Whoah!

Dangerous ground approaching!

We can't talk about 'nothing' as anything approaching zero without the measuring unit being agreed upon. After all, there's a world of difference between zero degrees Celcius and zero degrees Fahrenheit, not? Nothing of one is a lot of the other...

Thumbs up Re: Nothing

And that is *precisely* why we will have lost nothing if we do not immediately come to an understanding of a universally derivable unit of nothingness!

Please join me in my crusade to find the ultimate unit of nothing that can be agreed upon by all races, creeds, species and civilizations throughout the universe! Please give generously to the Nothingness Association for Unambiguously Gauging the Hyperattenuation of Tangibility!

Nothing like rigor to make one think. I suggest we adopt nothing less than the 'gob' as the basic unit of measure. I only recall a few of the multiples (nothing like a failing memory. )
