What's in a Biblical name?

Mary (as in Jesus's mother, Mary Magdelene and every other Mary) translated means: 'rebellious'.

Biblical names were given by parents to 'name' their childs 'personality'. So then if Jesus's mother's name was Mary, it means she had a rebellious personality.

Of course that is not in keeping with religious thought, but there is such a thing as 'healthy' rebellion.

To be unwed (tho betrothed to Joseph) and pregnant in those days was often met with death by stoning. However, Joseph was a good guy so he decided to 'put her away quietly'. In order for Mary to stand up to the kind of abuse that was no doubt directed at her, she would have needed to have a rebellious personality.

Though she was considered weak, this lady (actually when she was pregnant with Jesus, she was just a girl) had a great deal of character and strength.

I've no idea of Hebrew naming costums, but Mary comes from a hebrew root that literally would mean bitter, not rebellious.

Judas is a greek variant of Judah which is the hebrew for "he who is praised".

Thanks Erasmus00; doesn't seem to be contemporaryly appropriate considering how most feel about the name today.

Judas means 'to leave' in the first sense and in the second; to fail, be absent, be destitute, wanting, lack.

Where are you getting this information? Brown-Driver-Briggs (sort of the standard lexicon for biblical hebrew) puts Judah as "he who is praised". Judas is just a greek variant on the name. The BDB also translates Mary as bitter.

Well I guess this translation fits rather nicely does'nt it. How about the name Jesus. I've heard that his real name was Joshua, is there any truth to this interpretation?

Judas (as in Iscariot which means worldliness) is taken from Jehudah (Hebrew) referring to the character of Judas means 'wanting', while Judah (the tribe) is 'he who is praised'.
