Talking Between the Crucifixon & the Resurrection

Where was Jesus between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection?
(I don't mean physically...more spiritually)
I heard some rumours that when he died he went into hell to save souls!
(I was brought up as a Catholic and was an altar boy but can only remember the church being vacated of something between the Friday and the Sunday - maybe the cross or maybe something else).

The thing is when on the cross he said to one of the robbers "Today you will be with me in paradise". So this sounds like he went to heaven between the Crucifixion & the Resurrection.

It's just that I thought he went to hell.

Jesus, if he lived, died just as any other human being does and was not resurrected. Jesus ceased to exist after death. According to the Bible he was killed on Preparation Day, buried, then was resurrected after three days, and 40 days after he ascended into Heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. The idea that Jesus descended into Hell comes from the OT.
