Guide to get into university?

I recently took up interest in seeing what it takes, what is involved, and if I could get into a college or university.

A long story but I slacked through high school and actually failed physics 12... yah I know (mr physics theories here) . I graduated in 2001, and passed all other courses, finished with math 11, chem 12, physics 12(F), English 12, Local History 12.(i think)

So, I realise there is alot of members here who have been there done it and know all about it.

Is it too late? Can you take tests that can redeem your potential?

I have been spending years doing independent study as a hobby, but obviously not alot in the mathmatical department..

Anyhow, I am refering mainly to canadian universities, so if you have any information on the top of your head that you'd like to share or know of any really good links, fire away, I am all ears.

Re: Guide to get into university?

Kick butt on any standardized tests and try to get into the very top percentiles.

Do lots of extracurricular work, and volunteer... teach... that sort of thing looks really good.

Go speak to the registrars directly. Let them get to know your face. Bring them chocolate! Get on their good side, and try to get some insider information... hints/tips and the like.

Play up your strong points, and play down your weaknesses (i.e. don't adverstise too willingly, unless asked directly, that you failed physics... that sort of thing).

Off the top of my head, that's all I've got. That, and well wishes.

Good luck arkain!

Send a PM to Killean - he knows a thing or two about getting into college in Canada.

Re: Guide to get into university?

i don't know about Canada, but in US i find it is much easier and helpful when you go through community college just for 2 yrs and then transfer to good university as junior.

to get into any good university, just finish their basic requirements with at least B. DO some extra activity in your field and you should be set to go on.

FYI: In US most universities take more transfer students then right out of high school.

I am currently a community college student in California. Getting B or better in all required course and doing some volunteer work, i have locked my future in any UC system that i want.

We can certainly offer more to our viewers on how to get into a university. What other ideas do our members have to share?

Down here in Oz anyone over 21 who wants to go to uni can sit a Special Tertiary Admissions Test, regardless of how well they did at school. There are practice questions and workshops available so people can prepare for it. Do you have anything like that over there?
