I guess it's a natural byproduct of a human tendency to judge and our abilities to remember. Also, it's an efficient way to "get to know others" with out actually meeting them. I think people naturally like to gather data, naturally like to conserve time, and naturally form very concrete opinions of others. reputation is the result.
I think PG refers to the reputation system in our forums.
It's a system for giving credit for good posts, or taking away credit for poor posts. the blue icon under your member info (ie, the square with the check mark) is used for this purpose.

Here is one I've always wondered about the rep system. What is the point difference between the amount of green/red blocks? Ex: Reaching 100 or -100 rep points means you get a second block added under your title.

Let me do some experimenting, and I'll use you as the GP, ok? I'll make sure to put your rep points back by the end of the week, but i'm going to see how many it takes to add another block, or turn the one green one to red... it'll be a true scientific experiment!

Currently, Killean, you have a Reputation Level of 40, a reputation power of 0, and one green block that says you are on a distinguished road. i'm going to change your Reputation Level to 100, and see if that makes a difference to anything else.

At a Reputation Level of 100, you now have 2 green blocks that say 'Killean will become famous soon enough'. But still your reputation Power is 0. I'm not sure what the rep power is though... let me check this again, to see if the blocks go up by 100 or what...

at Reputation level 200, you now have 3 green blocks, and it says that you have a spectacular aura about.
i have 6 green blocks, and i am a glorious beacon of light. I think Tormod may have been nice to me though, because alex is the only one that has given me Rep points so far... even though i hand out rep points for the rest of you bums on an almost daily basis!

something else though... Tormod also has 6 green blocks, but he is a name known to all, instead of a glorious beacon of light. this is getting fun, huh?

2 red blocks at -150, and you're infamous around these parts.
so it seems that the block change is incremental, and the tag lines are incremental as well, but different increments.
