Girls? God I don't even want to get started, well maybe one: flipping through the channels, I caught something about a new show for some auditioning for think they're called pussycat dolls or whatever and one of the lines of one of the songs was "don't you wish your girlfriend looked hot like me". Way to go guys. That's just what you want your 7 or 8 or 9 year old daughter to be looking up to and when they can't measure up, BAM! you got emotional or psychological problems emerging. To me I've grown to conclude the media is the menace.

Naw, it was Kate Hepburn in "Woman of the Year" that made me who I am...

Though I suspect Madonna derives some personal satisfaction from her image as the person responsible for the Moral Corruption Of Today’s Youth, I don’t think jungjedi’s experiences with his little sister qualify as evidence for the claim.

Though the 1980s and 90s witnessed a lot of young girls wanting and trying to look like Madonna, she was as much a reflection of the dance club culture of that time as an influence on it, a culture with its origins at least as far back as the 1940s, and arguable much, much earlier. Though Madonna describes her influences as performers like Nancy Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe, and more contemporary ones like Chrissie Hynde, I think her similarity to English trained-dancer-turned-pop-singer Kate Bush, who’s career predated Madonna’s by about 4 years, (and who’s credited with originating the use of wireless headset mikes by singer/dancers) in undeniable (though M denies it).

Compared to later “teen idols” like Britney Spears (who was performing at age 10), Madonna started pretty late, at 20-22.

The biggest Madonna fan I know is a woman born in 1973. An aspiring musician who had a brief pop career in the 1990s before becoming a radio journalist, she admired Madonna more for her business skills than her music – Madonna is a high school drop-out who went from an estimated net worth of $35.00 to $325,000,000, earning the Guinness record for highest paid female singer ever.

OK, this thread has now wandered as far off topic as any I’ve seen in the medical forum, but this is the internet, and that’s an egregious STrek trivia error! (the Janeway-Hepburn comparison, not that Voyager sucked)

Kate Mulgrew, who resembles Katharine Hepburn in several ways, was not originally cast in the Janeway roll in ST:Voyager. The notoriously tempermental Genevieve Bujold, 13 years Mulgrew’s senior, was, but quit after 1 day of filming. Janeway’s first name was originally Nicole, but changed to Kathryn when Mulgrew assumed the role.

Re: Why so many disorders in children?

All this sounds like flimsy excuses for bad parenting. "It wasn't my fault, Britney/Madonna/Insert-Favorite-Slut-Here is so much more influential than me!" Hogwash! My kid knows that Britney is a slut and has no desire to emulate her. Madonna was hot when I was a teenager, and while yes, we all dressed like that, most of us more liberal types were appalled at Like a Virgin, although so much of her work is firmly in the Grrrl Power camp, so we forgave her lapses.

Bottom line: no, I don't think you know what you're talking about here. There are other reasons that people turn out the way they do, but more than anything, their thinking is just as critical (or not) as their parents are...

At some point kids do what they want to do, and its no longer your responsibility, but a lot of parents really suck. And--surprise--they *always* have.

To stir the pot: I have a friend who's teenage daughter just ran away from home. Its a loving family, but they're also Evangelical Christians, and really never *engaged* with their kid as she was growing up, since she was always expected to just get married (that's what all girls are supposed to do if they're good Christians, right?). The kid is now rebelling against her parents beliefs, but just doesn't have enough trust in them because they were always so busy with her younger sisters.

Blame is easy to place elsewhere,
Buffy

Am I counting the zero's in that correctly? Madonna must make Paul McCartney shovel her driveway.

I agree that bad parenting has a lot to do with the way kids are. Any foolish person can be a parent, and many foolish people *are* parents. Parents just don't have the time for their kids. Sure kids are influenced by their music/film idols but I think the bulk of the influencing is done in the home. I see now how my Mum has influenced me in a subconscious way and when I think about the amount of time I saw her I'm not surprised that I picked up this stuff. Parents these days seem so busy with work that kids are fed instant sub-par meals and left with TV and a playstation.

I knew a pastor who was too busy with other people that his teenage daughter ran away from home and was pregnant by the time she was 16. There's another guy I know who has two boys and two girls. He outwardly favours the boys and treats the oldest girl like she's the scum of the earth so she is constantly running away from home, and began doing so when she was 9 years old.

However, there is a family that lives across the road from me and every evening one of the parents is outside playing with the kids - cricket, football, soccer, bocce - while the other one is preparing dinner. They also play the piano and sing together, and I'm quite impressed with the time these guys spend with their kids. It will be interesting to see how they turn out.
