Why I am not active in Hypography?

Every once in a while I visit Hypography I face this notice, near the top of the page reminding me that I have not asked a question or participated in a discussion for a long time. Every time I consider doing so, but fail to find something to write about.

There was a time, when I used to look forward to doing so and my mind used to be brimming with ideas to start a thread, not any more!

Why?

It is not that the forum has changed for the worse, I really find little difference, except for the fact that many more subforums have been added, my old pals, turtle, CraigD, Boerseun, are as good as they were! Then why is it that I find little tp wtite about.

That is the question that arose in my mind two nights ago, I thought about it and doing so still. Let me share my thoughts.

I have been facing a similar problem with a forum I started about six months ago, for the science community of Delhi University. The forum receives several visitors everyday (to date it had some 2700 recorded visits) many people register too, but of them only very few have ever cared to post their views or participated in a discussion or raised a question. I have been puzzled. Initially I thought it was a characteristic of Indians only, but now perhaps I can understand the difficulty a visitor feels in logging in and starting posting.

It is a kind of mental inetia! One really does not know, where to start
Perhaps I have struggled to get out of that state I have to find it out tomorrow.

Nice to hear from you Charlie! You have at the least broken through with this post. What's growing in your garden? [long pause] i wanted to say more, but nothing comes to mind. even when you're gone, you're not forgotten.

I would respond, but I just don't know what to say. It's a great question, but I have nothing to add. Maybe once I've read the thoughts of others, I can better articulate my own. I mean, I don't want to look like a fool, and get attacked for sharing my opinion. Better to play it safe, and just be a fly on the wall.

If a writer gets writer's block when they are struggling to find fresh ideas, what does an artist get when they struggle to find inspiration to paint or sculpt? One would think that a sculpter's block is a different thing altogether.

As much as I love to respond to posts, a lot of the time I simply appreciate reading what others have to say.
It's not always necessary to respond to every single thread out there.

Interesting questions Hal...

I often experience lulls in enthusiasm/creativity as well. For science stuff, I find the news to be a good source of inspiration. Go to your favorite news source online and start browsing their science articles. Usually you will find something that interests you and then it's just a matter of forming your ideas about the subject and posting a link with some discussion topics.

That's what helps me anyways.
Just remember to do a search for the topic first to make sure no one else has started a similar topic.

Well, I am back Seems interesting! Why?

I think I have a hypothesis, thinking creatively requires a state of mind, which can occur if certain conditions are met. These conditions can be internal as well as external. Whether it is the external conditions that prompt the internal or the other way round can be matter of contemplation and debate.

For example, i have been suffering from a viral fever for about a week. While yje state of fever is over, its after effects, the physical weakness still persists and has been preventing me to do some tasks that would require some physical excertion, leaving a lot of time in which to brood. Participating on Hypography is something I like. So, the nett result is.....

O am still struggling a bit, I can feel that, but one can't acheive much without a struggle.

Similar situation for me.
I left Hypography in February 2007. But rejoined it in Aug 2007. I am a student of class X. In India, the expectation level is high in this age. Thus, I decided not to indulge in Hypography. But during my studies, there were questions whose answers I needed to find out and Google provided complicated links.
There came Hypography!! It provides answer to me in simple terms. Some guys like Eric l , Craig D try to explain to me in simple terms.( thank you for that).

in the past i found the same. it always seems to be i find a post/thread that really gets me into it (not always a good thing). i often need that kick, in this case a very interesting post, to get me involved in certain areas. i have not been to the UBC botanical garden for over a year, yet i used to LOVE that place...good thinking its a tough one.

Personally, emoticons and smilies turn me off. I won't read a post if it is riddled with emoticons. This thread is a good example of why I stay away. However, this is not to say that Hypography is a lousy forum—I've seen good post here, too.
