Zell Kravinsky has taken philanthropy to a new level. Not content with giving away millions of dollars to medical research and other charities, four years ago he also donated his kidney to a woman he didn't know.

Zell talks openly to Steve Evans about why he chose to do this 'non-directed organ donation' as it's called, and why he saw it as an 'enjoyable reward' after giving away a fortune he'd made in property development. He also talks about other people's reactions to his brand of philanthropy, and how his controversial views about our moral obligations to others have made him many enemies.

Stranger kidney donations rising

People can live normal, healthy lives with just one kidney

Twenty-two people have given a kidney to a stranger since the practice became possible in the UK two years ago, the body in charge of such donations says.

Ten put themselves forward in the first year and 15 in the second - three of these have not yet undergone surgery.

The Human Tissue Authority (HTA), which decides whether people are suitable, said the numbers were "remarkable".

There are currently 7,000 people waiting for a kidney in the UK amid a serious shortage of donor organs
