$50 Billion Science Thing

This item from The Onion is really brilliant...and don't miss the wonderful illustration!

Scientists Ask Congress To Fund $50 Billion Science Thing

"Top physicists from several major American universities appeared before a Congressional committee Monday to request $50 billion for a science thing that would further U.S. advancement science-wise and broaden human knowing."

my favorite quote:
"Fifty billion dollars to buy atoms is too much," Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL) said. "Frankly, I don't understand why they don't just gather up all the leftover atoms in their test tubes and Bunsen burners. I think the scientists should have to use those up before getting new ones."

"We must not forget that when radium was discovered no one knew that it would prove useful in hospitals. The work was one of pure science. And this is a proof that scientific work must not be considered from the point of view of the direct usefulness of it." - Marie Curie

Lightbulb Re: $50 Billion Science Thing

the science thing even looks like an onion with all its layers peeled back. it's a conspiracy and possibly indecent! i can grow a science thingy for a tenth of that AND reduce CO2 emissions at the same time. if you look at the diagram it is clear that if you make the 2 bigger, you don't need 3 and most of 4. there's a big savings right there. you reduce the volume by using garlic instead of onions.
