Re: How Things Get Done in Texas

It is certainly a weakness of the pushbutton system. A few years back, when there was a scandal about this happening in Italian parliament, journalists called them pianists.

As for citizens voting, law over here has always required photo ID and its serial number must be noted on the record.

Re: How Things Get Done in Texas

It might be useful to find a list of states where this does not happen. I'd like to see just how different (or similar) Texas is in this regard.

Re: How Things Get Done in Texas

The pushbutton systems should definitely be designed to avoid it. The weakness of that video is that the journalists (But then they are always dumb, aren't they?) talk as if the damaged party were only the legislator. They, and even the interviewed citizen, talk mainly about it being against the house's own rules and imply the unfairness in comparison to the fact that they want to prevent it when citizens vote, but don't really touch on the real point of import.

How much do you care about the laws of your country being chosen (at least indirectly) by the people? Would you be content to have them playing some tricky video game against each other, to pass or fail bills? Suppose they actually decided this, at the start of the legislature, would that suit you?

Re: How Things Get Done in Texas

This certainly looks like an opportunity to deploy a biometric authentication system. Then again maybe the people of Texas just need to petition for a measure on the ballot to implement severe consequences for legislators caught in the act on camera.

Re: How Things Get Done in Texas

Severe enough to make it not worth risking, even for their party.

Over here, the ones caught were expelled and deferred to the public prosecutor.
