Re: Department of Redundancy Department
When I posted this topic, I was afraid some might take it that way. My concern was that people would construe this thread as a post-padding scheme. Nonetheless, even though I considered the possibility of being labeled a post-padder, I decided to go through with it, despite my hesitations.

Re: Department of Redundancy Department
Christmas pudding is, as far as I know, something they eat (in other words an edible entity to be consumed by means of the mouth) on Christmas Island.

Re: Department of Redundancy Department
redundant words - redundant prefixes - redundant suffixes - redundant letters - redundant syllables - most of the English language is redundant.
“irregardless”
Who is that word trying to fool? It stole another word’s definition and spelling - added a redundant prefix and thought nobody would notice. Yeah, we’re on to you!
“geometrical”
Dude, that geometric series is so geometrical man.
“electronical”
If I have an electric car, an electrical car, and an electronical car…. how many cars do I have exactly?
“thievery”
Did you see what thievery did? Thievery came along and STOLE theft’s definition!
Yeah, thievery is in the dictionary - suspiciously close to the word theft.
“truthfulness”
Truthfully - Is there true truthfulness in a truthful truth?
If truth is a noun,
and truthful is an adjective,
and truthfulness is a noun again,
is truthfulness-ful an adjective again?
Where does the insanity stop? We seriously need to stop adding bits and pieces to our words… because eventually they get written down in the dictionary and we’re all screwed.
- modest
PS - the only word that my spell checker didn’t like was electronical. I'm sure it will eventually be a common word.

Re: Department of Redundancy Department
I'm trying to learn to say ATM machine. I'm trying to think of the ATM part as adjectival, or I'm trying to keep my mouth shut.
To see my best example of repetition, check out my post (#144) on the "What is Science" thread, where I ask pretty much the same question at least a half dozen times. And, if that isn't enough, try the earlier posts where I asked the same question.
