Department of Redundancy Department

Inspired by the "Double positives and Double negatives" thread, I decided I needed to study redundancy as part of my educational needs.

It will be fun and I know everyone will enjoy it in a fun-like manner. It's not intended to be serious so any seriousness should not be intended.

But seriously, to make this thread applicable to linguistics (rather than the watercooler), I suggest that we create the most clever examples of redundancy and attempt to analyze the context and psycholinguistics that precipitate. This will help make the thread more applicable to linguistics.

Why do we use redundancy and why is it used?

Re: Department of Redundancy Department

My 11th-grade English teacher (thank you Mrs. Vessey!) always beat me up for *not* restating. Tell them what you're going to say, then say it, then tell them what you've just told them. Turned out to be *essential* for being good at PR!

Alfred Hitchcock said, "There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it." So if you watch his movies, he always tells you what he's going to do and then he does it (well, sometimes he doesn't, and *that's* suspense!). Imagine the shower scene in Psycho where you don't have all the "Norman's eye view" before the murder...

There's great value in repetition!

I agree, but then there's the question of "Where does the value of repetition fade into the mundaneness of redundancy?". What separates the two?

Re: Department of Redundancy Department

But tell us how you really feel, Q? I think everyone would like a clarification. How do you feel about redundancy, specifically your feelings...about redundancy.

Hate is relative, and relatively speaking, I hate hate. I wouldn't bring this up, but it bothers me. Hating hate seems arbitrary, and hate hating seems arbitrary, relatively speaking.

Re: Department of Redundancy Department

I would perhaps argue that without redundancy, it might (perhaps) be difficult to argue that redundancy is important in order to state something more than once (instead of, say, twice), without making it clear that it is the redundancy itself that is helping you repeat yourself for the purpose of making something clear.
