Its Official: Women Aren't Good Drivers

Study now concludes what fretful straight men have been well aware of.

Women, and gay men, are the worst drivers!

Women and gay men are 'worst drivers' - Telegraph

This is in the Biology section becuz' the study was based on determining spatial ability between the sexes.

Quote:
Women and gay men are likely to be the worst drivers, a new study has shown.

Be afraid: Women or gay men could be behind the wheel of any car
Research has revealed that both perform poorly in tasks involving navigation and spatial awareness when compared to heterosexual men.

Psychologists at Queen Mary, University of London, who conducted the study, believe the findings mean driving in a strange environment would be more difficult for gay men and women than for straight male motorists.

Both tend to rely on local landmarks to get around, and are also slower to take in spatial information.

The computer-based tests were carried out on 140 volunteers, and demonstrated that gay men, straight women and lesbians navigated in a similar way, sharing the same weaknesses.

The results back earlier studies supporting the stereotype that women are poor navigators.

Although women are more successful in tests requiring them to remember the position of objects, men consistently do better in tasks requiring navigation and uncovering hidden objects.

The research team, led by Dr Qazi Rahman, used virtual reality simulations of two common tests of spatial learning and memory developed at Yale University
I thought the stereotype was also reinforced that women tend to gab on their cell phones and apply make-up as they drive...

What is the definition of "better?"

The *very first* comment on the story on the linked page is:
Quote:
This research was done in the biology department at London's Queen Mary University. It's not "social science". It was about gender differences in spatial awareness, not driving. And it says people are "different", not "worse".

Please don't insult scientists because a Telegraph journalist decided to put some spin on the story.

The original (un-spun) report is at link
Men tailgate and drive too fast and cut people off.

Guess who has higher insurance premiums?

Can do mascara, drink coffee, check e-mail and drive at the same time,

Better --v.t. 1. improve, 2. surpass. --n. 1, something or someone superior

I always thought it was BS that mens insurance premiums are higher I think the reason is becuz' they drive more hours comparatively.

Anywayz - take the study with a grain of salt.

I think what Buffy was getting at is that the study says men are *better* at spatial navigation. Since spatial navigation is only one aspect of many in driving, to say better overall is inconclusive.

I don't think that's the reason. I think it has more to do with testosterone, especially among younger drivers.

I think I'm going to be naughty and send the "Telegraph" (what an appropriate name for them if you consider the old game of telephone/telegraph) version to my colleagues (2 gay guys and a female) via email.

Don't worry, I'll follow it with the actual study...

Huh? If you're working, the commute to Silicon Valley is no shorter if your a woman (don't I wish it was! ). If you're a stay-at-home, do you have any idea how many miles you rack up going back and forth to school, the store, soccer practice, Tae Kwon Do, school, French Horn, the store, and so forth ad nauseum and mostly in street traffic which has a far higher accident-per-mile-driven rate? And if you're like me, its both of those together...

I've never lived/been married to any guy who put more miles on his car than I did! Not even close!

Re: Its Official: Women Aren't Good Drivers

One way to look at the study is; women and gays may have an advantage when it comes to using learned or routine information when driving. They can often perfect this and then multi-task. The males are better at improvising when driving, when they are out of the information bandwidth. The male may improvise his contempt for a particular driver by tail-gating him, figuring he will be able to stop just in time, even when unpredictable. The old stereotype of males not wanting to ask for directions, suggest the males attempting to improvise, while the female is trying to learn information. Improvising is sort of developing the info on the fly. Feminine men are sort of on the bridge, able to improvise, but preferring to do it like the ladies; less risky.

How so? Does the article support this idea?

This is not only a broad generalization, but a sweeping one at that.
Who are 'they'?

I'm a male, and I abhor tailgaters (not to be confused with tail-gaiters). But I see your point.

Yes, that's the stereotype I'm familiar with.

Or, a creative process that modulates expression spontaneously.

Making a statement such as "feminine men are sort of on the bridge" is about as accurate as saying " ".

If no one objects, I feel this thread has gone off-topic and is better suited for another sub-forum; perhaps, social sciences.

Re: Its Official: Women Aren't Good Drivers

To add another off-topic post to the hopper...

I'm tired of all of the sunday newspaper pop-cultural interpretation of archaic freudian bullshit being used as an attempt to add legitimacy to bigotry and ignorance... being thrown into social sciences. They are social, and they are science. It's important to recognize the difference between social sciences and psuedointellectual bullshit wrapped in a cape of non-understanding and fancy words.

Please put this thread into the watercooler if you're going to put it anywhere.

What is this in reference to?

Huh?

I'd prefer the thread gets back on track. Barring that, it will get deleted.
