Disregard the above, the fish has absolutely set a new world record. It was the 400 meter qualification round I saw
I just wish Ian Thorpe and him competed more, they made good races

Australia won their first gold in the pool today - Stephanie Rice won the girls 400m individual medley, beating the world record by 2 seconds!

Alexander Dale Oen took the Silver in the 100M Breaststroke! That's fantastic! Even though his time was worse than in the semifinals. Can you imagine - 6 out of 8 swimmers made it under a minute...incredible.

Re: Great start in the Olympics

Ummm.... Let's talk about the men's freestyle relay. It was honestly, the greatest relay that I've ever seen in my life. Jason Lezac was flawless. He definitely put those Frenchman in their place, after they talked all that smack. They were so sure they would win, but he caught up, to get a beastly time of 46. It was just absolutely perfect. That's what competition is all about.

Re: Great start in the Olympics

The Swimming has been great! I love when world records are set at the games. I am still waiting to hear about the underdogs of these games. The Eddie the Eagle type story where an odd-ball becomes a crowd favorite. Something like the Jamican bobsled team... Afghanistan Beach volleyball team?

I couldn't help grinning for you last night on this one T. The first ever Olympic medal in swimming for Norway!! Congratulations!!

I'm trying not to read too much in this thread 'cause I'm on the West coast and the last to get the 'live' coverage. I read Mercede's blip on Phelps first gold before it played here.

Re: Great start in the Olympics

Spoiler Alert

Michael Phelps is 3 for 3 with another world record beaten by almost a second in the 200 meter freestyle. Are we placing any bets if he'll get all eight? Ian Thorpe is quoted saying he doesn't think he'll do it. I think he will.

There's very LITTLE doubt in my mind that Phelps won't get it all. He's essentially one of the most powerful forces the olympics has ever seen.

Re: Great start in the Olympics

The 100-meter butterfly was amazing.

Quote:
Phelps won his seventh gold medal of the Beijing Games and tied Mark Spitz's 36-year-old record for championships in one Olympics, taking the men's 100-meter butterfly by 0.01 second over Milorad Cavic of Serbia...

Cavic said the difference between gold and silver was too small to describe in normal terms.

``Maybe a shaved finger,'' he said at a news conference. ``It's something you can't show, it was that fast.''
