| | | Hurricane! Well I've spent the day tying down and moving everything that might blow away or become a missile. I have 55 gallons of drinking water stored and 200 gallons of water to bath with or flush toilets. Non perishable food is in place and my propane tank is full! Lots of oil lamps and oil to burn in them, batteries and flash lights. I'll spend tomorrow morning looking around to see if I've missed anything. Hurricane Hanna is coming to my town tomorrow night around midnight! Actually I'm more worried about Ike following up next week but what I've done this time will be ready for Ike as well

| | | Re: Hurricane! To be honest I would be surprised if more than one in five are really prepared. Most just sit back and expect to be taken care of. I am very uncomfortable with this attitude, I have been here for 37 years, I've seen bad storms and storms that were nothing but an excuse to have a party. One summer we had two bad ones with six weeks of each other. I like to sit in my yard and eat my food and sleep in my bed, I can do with out electricity if i have to and cook on an open fire If i need to. I always make sure I have rice and beans at least for a couple of weeks in my house all the time. I usually don't worry about getting ice or things like that. Keeping perishables with out electricity is a loosing game. I eat them all up first then turn to non perishables. I keep plenty of charcoal and propane on site. I often joke and say if nothing else I can kill one of my dogs if I have to so I can eat. i wouldn't hurt my doggies but the neighbor had better keep a close eye on his if things stay bad for a very long time. Plenty of ammo and guns are important too. I'm not one of those nuts who wants to stay away from every one live in a hole but I will not go down with out a fight. I like to keep enough non perishable food on hand so I can help others too, i guess i am too liberal to let people around me starve.

Winds are up today after three days of almost complete stillness. Rain bands moving through, rain is moderate so far. I think I'll take a nap.

| | | Re: Hurricane! Well it's all over with but the clean up, not much of a storm, not even much rain, about 2". Lots of debris laying around, limbs and such a few trees down and a few buildings with light damage. About 30,000 people lost power, probably be back up in a couple of days. Could have been a lot worse but that's always true.

~modest | Yeah, I'm glad Ika has made a turn for the gulf but I pity the people it will hit. Clean up is all that is left now, lots stuff to pick up and burn. I already have a big pile.
