I can circle a wall and protect it from towers.
I can change my direction yet have no legs.
I start up high and amass at the bottom.
I am uncontrolled by man.
What am I?

It seems to me that people tend to prefer to believe what they want to be real or true, despite evidence to the contrary.

When what you believe is refuted by evidence, you are faced with a choice.
