Tolkien was not only a language scholar, but an astute student of Mythology. His Fellowship of the Ring is in fact based on one particular myth, just in reverse.

How is crayfish closer to "Grouch" than crab. Crab literately means grouch.

there are similarities in the trilogy and the Silmarillion to the Bible, but also to other mythologies. One can say the same about C.S.Lewis although some of his work is clearly written with a Christian theme.
