I think I know this one. I was first thinking of onions, but couldn't think of the heaven part. But sitting around a nice open fire in the outdoors, when the smoke blows in my direction it will bring tears to my eyes, and then it rises into the sky until it disappears. So my answer is...

Smoke.

The stench of a skunk part is the hang-up here, but I'll take a wild stab at the answer anyway: War
