Smile Re: Quirky Science Facts!

I am enjoying reading Bill Bryson's "A Short History of Nearly Everything" very much.
It is full of 'quirky science facts' Such as:

"We have 46 chromosomes, but some ferns have more than 600"

"The Lung fish, one of the least evolved of all complex animals, has 40 times as much DNA as we have"
P365
I wonder WHY?

Re: Quirky Science Facts!

Hit the back of the head of a person with a big stick hard enough and 99% chances are there of severe memory loss.

Now how do I get out of this room?

Quirky science fact (and answer to your question Ron):
If a person walks backward out of a room while facing a person in the room with a big stick, they have a 98.304% chance of not getting hit in the back of their head with a big stick wielded by that person in the same room.

Is the big stick a boomerang?

I hate people who walk backwards.
Especially though a doorway you are trying to go through

FROM:
Bill Bryson's "A Short History of Nearly Everything"
"Some scientists now think that there could be as much as 100 trillion tonnes of bacteria living beneth our feet. . .if you took all the bacteria and dumped them on the surface, they would cover the planet to a depth of 15 metres. . .there could be more life under the earth than on top of it."

Plants can't synthesise cholesterol, so no fruit or veggie contains it...

May I see scientific basis behind this?

Coz it seems like 98.298% chance according to my... guess

Adult cats with no health problems are in deep sleep 15 percent of their lives. They are in light sleep 50 percent of the time.
