When the duck-billed platupus was found in Australia years ago, European scientists struggled to classify and name it (after being convinced that it wasn't a hoax, of course). So, they named it
platypus, being latin for "flat-foot". Not very original, but then some bright spark found that the name
platypus was already assigned to a species of beetle, which also had flat feet! So the scientists went back to the drawing board, and came up with the proper name,
ornithorhynchus, meaning "bird-bill". Much more descriptive.
Problem is, once they decided on the proper name, "platypus" was already embedded in the public mind, and became the popular name for it. But till today, when you talk about a "platypus", you're actually talking about a specific beetle. So almost without fail, the term "duck-billed" is inserted in front of "platypus" for the distinction to be made.
...but the proper name is
ornithorhynchus anatinus.
So now you know!
