Intellectually speaking, masturbation is not only okay, it's good for you. It is a self education in the early years, and an excellent stress reliever in the later years. It has no known bad side effects, when practiced 'reasonably' and not 'excessively'. It is not morally degrading, or mentally harmful.

Emotionally speaking, it is a whole nuther ball of wax.

By 'reasonably' I mean that it should not be performed in a manner that is inherently risky, like the so-called "choking game" that has killed several young teens in Houston recently. Nor with sharp instruments. Nor with any risk of fecal or biological contamination. Nor while standing up in a canoe -- you get the idea. By 'excessively', I mean to the point where (for men) erection has to be forced. Or where it interferes with daily life. That varies by individual. Personally, I would say that 4 or 6 times a day is not excessive for some, perhaps for others.

What do you mean by a fantasy being "appropriate"?

About fantasies. Orby is right. It is not easy to be aroused by a fantasy that just doesn't do anything for you. Not all fantasies are rational, or even possible to do! Some fantasies will take you by the ...er... throat, and turn you every way but loose, when they first occur to you -- then after a few days/weeks/months, they leave you stone cold.

I find that many of my fantasies are memories of actual past events -- OR -- are based on actual events that didn't turn out too good, really, but in the fantasy version, they turn out spectacular.

If you are considering the under age participants of your fanstasy while masturbating, it's gray area. It's okay in some sense since, when you first found the other person an object of desire, you were both the same age. However, now that you are older, the fantasy should reside more within the way you felt at the time (when you were younger) as opposed to still fantasizing about the under age person themselves (which yes, would not be as appropriate). It is, however, a fantasy and is fine as long as it remains an imagined experience and doesn't venture into the realm of actuality.
