RE: FAVORITE BANDS

Hmm...where to start. This kind of thing changes all the time so I'll list the ones I can think of right now...

I've listened to these Swedish guys for two years now, and they are brilliant: Kent

Untouchables: The Beatles, The Verve, Bruce Springsteen, The Police

All Time Favorites are of course crammed together in a separate list: U2, The Cure, Pink Floyd, Faith No More, Pearl Jam, Counting Crows, Sting, Dire Straits, Simon & Garfunkel, Massive Attack, Portishead

Some Norwegian bands which are on the above list but listed separately for promotion : September When (or actually anything by front man Morten Abel), A-Ha, Velvet Belly, Röyksopp

And being a guitarist I can't not mention some solo acts... John Scofield, Mark Knopfler, Steve Vai, Robben Ford.

...and of course Rick Astley and Samantha Fox!

i didn't know you were a guitarist Tormod, me too! i definitely dig knopfler and vai, not too much of a satriani fan i mean he's really good but it just doesn't move me. whatever happened to A-HA. they had that "take on me" song which was a great song for it's time but then they faded, at least in the states, did they last longer in norway?

yeah unc. i like F-Mac and fiona apple as well. what did jim steinman(not familiar with him) do on bat out of hell( i'm assuming the meat loaf album right?) because if you're talking about that stuff i'll definitely check him out. i can't particularly agree on abba but then again, there's plenty of my music that would probably make you want to chop your ears off and wish you had never heard of music

Are you kidding? They're still going strong!

http://www.a-ha.sk/facts/a-ha_facts.htm

They were the first Norwegian band ever to hit the number 1 on the Billboards, so they have a special place in our hearts...

As for being a guitarist, yes - I have a Bachelor of Music degree and have played classical guitar since 1982 and jazz since around 1987.

RE: FAVORITE BANDS

ok, favorite bands or musicians? I'm guessing since tormod listed both Sting AND the Police, it could mean either, huh?

This thread really shocked me. I NEVER would have guessed Gahd for a rockabilly fan! "The Gambler, indeed! Tres magnifique, mon petit ami! (4 years of French, 5 days in Paris)

Also, I can't believe that A-Ha is still around. My daughter loves to roll her eyes when I listen to regular radio during the "golden '80s" lunch hour. I almost feel like part of a history lesson! But I always loved A-Ha, and Simply Red. Also, the Dream Academy was awesome!! Now I lean more towards Third Day and Delirious.

I was into the second Brit invasion for a while, but the 80s bands wore just way too much makeup for me to take them seriously for too long! I did my Duran days though. Of course, The Cure is still at the top of my faves list. "Pictures of You" was on my answering machine for the longest time. Then I went 'beachy' and Buffet was my man.

I've been all over with music, the only thing I've never learned to appreciate is rap. The beats are ok, it's just the lyrics that generally bother me. Also, dance/techno has never really interested me. Country, Swing, Mod, Metal, AdContemp, Easy listening,Christian rock, and Jazz are currently in my 200-changer though.

RE: FAVORITE BANDS

Oh, and in case anyone missed it from the various other threads, references and sigs, my favorite musician is Van Morrison. Of course, i don't really think of him as a musician, but an incredibly talented artist.

Favorite Bands include: Cure, Police, Damned (Phantasmogoria rocks!), anything including Clapton, and Restless Heart!

Je ne suis pas petit!
I lovemy country rock, but all my metalhead friends can't quite understand it. Also a fan of classic country; Gary Allen's "Smoke rings in the dark" rings true with me in too many ways.

for swing, 'Tito Puentes' has some good stuff. Not a fan of cRAP? Try listening to 'Wyclef Jean' "a Perfect Gentleman". If that's still too risque try 'Bone Thugs and (some times 'N' replaces 'and') Harmony', "Lets Change The World" and "Take Me Home" being choice cuts.

To Techno/dance I'd suggest you download 'underworld' "Cowgirl Techno", or even the techno remix of beethoven's "fur Elise".

if you like humourous bands 'Buddy Wasisname' is good; "Swearing song" (no actual swears, surprisingly) and "dear mister ford" being particularly good in my mind.
Also the 'Arrogant Worms'; "Toronto Sucks", "I am Cow", "great to be a nerd", and "the last saskatchewan pirate"(check the map while listening to this one), are some of my favs. "The war of 1812" should be required listening in all north american schools and "goin' huntin' " is just priceless.
