Re: Stupid questions...

I feel like this questions not thread worthy so i'll post it here. When people talk about acid concentration in % i.e. 98% sulphuric acid, how do you work out it's conc in mol dm3?

Re: Stupid questions...

Methane in the sunlight reacts with chlorine, what would be the case in moonlight?

Re: Stupid questions...

Hmmm... technically moonlight is reflected sunlight, but does it contain enough UV to start the reaction? Lol, where's a chemist when ya need one...

Re: Stupid questions...

That sounds ok moo.. the moon is thousands of times dimmer than the sun and over a much thinner spectrum. So there is either not enough intensity to overcome the backwards reaction or the wrong wavelengths present.

Re: Stupid questions...

I would expect there to be a 'critical frequency' situation is this free radical halogenation process.

I mean that the photons having energies above a specific limit will succeed in splitting the chlorine molecules.

This means that it will be wavelength rather than intensity that determines wether the reaction goes or not. For the moon, it might be very slow, but it might happen.

But then, does the moonlight have the required frequencies? It does reflect whitish, so I'd expect it to reflect UV also. Dunno.

A Fine-Tooth Comb To Measure The Accelerating Universe
imageAstronomical instruments needed to answer crucial questions, such as the search for Earth-like planets or the way the Universe expands, have come a step closer with the first demonstration at the telescope of a new calibration system for precise spectrographs. The method uses a Nobel Prize-winning technology called a 'laser frequency comb', and is published in this week's issue of Science.

Fermilab physicists discover "doubly strange" particle
imagePhysicists of the DZero experiment at the U.S. Department of Energy's Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory have discovered a new particle made of three quarks, the Omega-sub-b (Ωb). The particle contains two strange quarks and a bottom quark (s-s-b). It is an exotic relative of the much more common proton and weighs about six times the proton mass.

Stanford's 'autonomous' helicopters teach themselves to fly
imageStanford computer scientists have developed an artificial intelligence system that enables robotic helicopters to teach themselves to fly difficult stunts by watching other helicopters perform the same maneuvers. The result is an autonomous helicopter than can perform a complete airshow of complex tricks on its own.
