There is a persistent rumor, and I have some geneologists on this as I key, that Johnny Appleseed -aka John Chapman- is a twig on my family tree. This wouldn't surprise me at all as he was, if nothing else, a reclusive whack-job eccentric.
Johnny was a great fan & follower of another nut-case eccentric of the era, one Emanuel Swedenborg.

Now back to whether or not Johnny was a vandal, if you mean that he cleared some native plants to put in apples then I suppose you could argue it was vandalism, but then I would argue back that vandalism goes to intent. Funny fellow that he was, Johnny had the best of intentions and respect for all life. He once threw away a shoe to punish his foot for stepping on a worm, for crying out loud!
For myself, I am currently guerrilla gardening in my own yard, a rental property, by replacing grass with planting beds and putting in native plants that I have collected as well as fostering along those already here, and all the while doing my best to decrease the population of foreign invaders by ripping them up by they little roots.

Love it. We need more of these here in Utah, instead of emerald green lawns. Thought the paper seed bomb idea was clever. That's almost like "seed balls" which were used in ancient farming.

In the epigenetic genes eh!
Intent?, yes of course, Graffiti artists are just trying to beautify our environment (another Yank import).
I have just grown some apple trees from apple seeds (Granny Smith and Pink Lady fruit). It was surprisingly easy.
This PM ,wet Sunday, i have killed 108 snails. i think i am just not going to be able to cut it as a good Buddhist.

apple trees from seeds never grow true to the parent. this is why tasty-apple apple trees always come as grafts. ever so often, a not-true apple tree from seed has unusually delicious, rather than usual crab-apply apples as most from seed are, and then when that happens, maybe someone notices the unusually delicious apple and starts taking grafts from its tree.
johnny was planting apple seed trees to provide apples for making cider and vinegar, which settlers needed to...er, well, settle. crab-apply apples work just fine for cider & vinegar. i think this is told in the botany of desire?

That's because apples don't grow "true" from their seeds. Each seed is the result of pollination, and the genetic mix means that the resulting tree will include characteristics from both parents.
When apple growers want to preserve the characteristics of an apple type they like, often they graft a shoot from the desirable tree and attach it permanently to the root stock of another. As the grafted shoot grows, it will produce apples that are true in flavor and type to the original tree. ...

Indeed!
Johnny was really interested in apple seeds for the same reason that every other guerilla gardener of that time (in the midwest US) was after. Cheap horse feed! Apparently, horses are not as picky as us humans when it comes to apples.
(and everyone knows you need some horses to settle the "wild west" (Illinois/Indiana/etc.))

It's my little experiment- if i live long enough to see fruit.

I am told that up until WW2, at least in the UK, carrots were only ever fed to horses. With food shortages in WW2, Poms started to eat carrots-- probably the horses too
I was very tempted to buy some seeds of different coloured carrots the other day ( purple, white and?). I never knew they came in other colours other than orange.

buddha is still dead and will be making nothing of anything soon. i'm still crawlin' though , and while i have no immediate special note or notation for 307, i did notice that it is 3 more than the 3 rd anomalous strange number. 3x3 is 9 and 108 divided by 9 is 12 and 1+2=3.
still, and moreover or some such a matter, knowing you dislike math a bit mick, here is something akin to counting your apple-trees-from-seeds leaves' progress.
Q: what did one apple grower say to another apple grower?
A: make like 2/5 of a tree and leave.
