Post The need for ECGs etc.

These sound files are interesting. I listened to a few: “Classical”, “Dreamy”, and some of the 60-minute-long “Journey”. It took me a while to stop finding their signature repetitive tone annoying, but after I did, I found them fairly pleasant and relaxing – though not as much as typical ambient music, or psychedelic rock classics such as Hendrix’s masterpiece Electric Ladyland.

The main idea behind these acoustic compositions appears to be that, via their repetitive repeating tones, they can induce characteristic EEG wave patterns, and the mental states associated with those EEG. I don’t have access to the equipment needed to take EEGs, and suspect that not many if any of the folk at iso-tones do, either, so can’t offer much of a scientific opinion supporting or contradicting this claim, but perhaps someone reading this does, and would give them a try.

My anecdotal impression is that I’m better able to enter a trance mental state without any of these tones than with them, using commonplace rhythmic breathing and progressive relaxation techniques.

It would be interesting to test the connection between sound and mental state – IMHO, there clearly is some connection – but speculating about it as if you have real data, when you don’t, and especially claiming evidence of alleged phenomena such as astral projection that have been pretty convincingly experimentally shown not to exist, can be hazardous intellectual territory.

As the saying goes, it’s good to keep an open mind, but no so open that your brain falls out.
