So, the 1999 Martian Meteorite may not have contained life after all. But while it turned out to be a cosmic joke, the laughter softened after last week's surprise news that NASA has found compelling evidence for ancient lakes on Mars. They believe that they have found traces of sedimentary rock.

On Earth, that's were all the fossils are. Obviously, there is a possibility that we may find fossils on Mars as well. It would be a breakthrough of unimaginable dimensions.

But the eyes of the life-hunters are not focused only on Mars. NASA and other research institutions are spending vast amounts on money on finding the keys to cosmic chemistry, in which they hope to see the signature of life.

If they do, the answer to one of our most fundamental questions may be: "Life did not originate on Earth."
